Data Domain Customer to Present on Virtualization and Storage Consolidation Best Practices at VMworld 2009

Data Domain, an EMC
company and the leading provider of deduplication storage systems,
announced presentations at two speaking sessions at the upcoming
VMworld 2009 conference in San Francisco. The sessions highlight the
benefits of combining deduplication storage and virtualization to
enable enterprise-wide data consolidation benefits.
Jules Thomas, senior systems administrator for Pitt Ohio
Express, a regional less-than-truckload freight company located in
Pennsylvania will discuss the advantages and benefits realized by
architecting a virtualized data center with VMware and Data Domain. The primary data center at Pitt Ohio Express is more than 70% virtualized today with a near-term goal of a 99% virtual environment, and the entire data protection operations can be managed remotely. Thomas also will demonstrate virtual server backup and recovery techniques during the session.
VMworld 2009 takes place August 31 through September 3 at The Moscone Center in San Francisco.
Session #1 Title: Planning for Optimized and Cost-effective Storage Utilizing Deduplication and Virtualization (VMworld Session #BC3223)
Speakers: Jules Thomas, Senior Systems Administrator for Pitt
Ohio Express and Daniel Budiansky, Data Domain Enterprise Applications
Technologist
Date/Time/Location: Wednesday, September 2 from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. in Room 132
Session Description: In today's constrained economic and IT climate, adopted solutions must demonstrate immediate, tangible business benefits as well as ongoing ROI. Deduplication and server virtualization provide the enterprise data center with a number of complementary benefits including hardware and footprint reduction, simplified management and improved power and cooling that serve to offer a more efficient and cost-effective environment. This session will focus on backup, disaster recovery and archive approaches that harness the power of VMware data protection applications via deduplication and WAN-based replication. Jules Thomas of Pitt Ohio Express, a joint VMware and Data Domain user, will provide a case study and demonstrate virtual server backup and recovery techniques.
Session #2 Title: The Real Deal on Dedupe and Virtualization
Speaker: Daniel Budiansky, Data Domain Enterprise Applications Technologist
Date/Time/Location: Tuesday, September 1 from 1:50 - 2:20 p.m. in Hall C of the Solutions Exchange Theatre
Session Description: Server consolidation via virtualization provides clear data center efficiency benefits, but can also create new challenges for backup, archive and DR. Tape-based data protection processes are inefficient, slow and unreliable, and these challenges can be exacerbated in virtualized environments. In addition, there are a number of different approaches to protecting virtual machines. Best practices usually combine more then one approach into an overall data protection strategy, and understanding the options -- and the considerations for when to utilize them -- can be difficult. This session will describe these considerations for best practices and highlight the combined benefits of using server virtualization and disk-based deduplication to achieve a more efficient and cost-effective data center.
